Nudist vacations are more popular than ever, however a clothing optional resort southwest of Lonedell, which is 45 minutes from St. Louis, is having a hard time getting off the ground. While nudists are excited about a possible nudist resort in the area, those that own land and homes in the area are concerned about what such a resort will do to property values as well as the type of people that will be traipsing through their neighborhoods.
The Franklin County Planning and Zoning Commission in Union held a public meeting on April 18 that was attended by a large crowd of neighbors that oppose such a controversial resort. The commission did not take any action after the hearing, but another meeting was scheduled for May 16.
A citizen of High Ridge is the one seeking a conditional use permit that will allow him to operate Caribbean Breezes, which is an RV park, campground, as well as a private nudist resort and club on 52 acres of beautiful land off of Yellow Dog Road. This is beautiful farmland and many neighbors are worried about who would want to live next to a nudist resort. The owner stipulates that there would be no effects to the community at large that the park would simply be open year around providing naturists access to a hot tub, beautiful pools, and a sizeable clubhouse.
For the comfort of others, criminal background checks would be performed on all of the 300 members of the club. Because of the rural setting, the developer of the proposed project has said that none of the facilities such as the beautiful indoor and outdoor pools or clubhouses would be seen by those just passing by.
The proposed nudist resort will have a Caribbean theme and will provide a fun and relaxing clothing optional environment. While many of the citizens have worked to collect over 600 signatures opposing this resort, the developer is very excited about these plans. Though the local public at large opposes the resort, it will help to provide income to the area as people travel through and shop locally. A ruling has yet to be made by the zoning committee, but there is a lot of support from other nudists and their neighbors stating that a nudist resort does not promote deviant behavior. Needless to say, neighbors as well as the developer await the ruling with anxious anticipation.
